Banchina Italian Restaurant

Gloucester Quays, Gloucester

Q&A Interior Designers were commissioned to develop the interior design for Banchina Italian at Gloucester Quays, creating a relaxed and welcoming restaurant inspired by the warmth, colour and character of Italy.



The design combines rich terracotta and olive tones with natural walnut, brass, marble and textured finishes. Existing exposed brick arches are retained and celebrated, providing an architectural backdrop to the layered palette of fluted timber, woven cane and deep upholstered seating. Burnt orange accents and contrasting striped fabrics add a playful, contemporary character.

    A key feature is the series of bespoke illustrated artworks, set within the existing arches and dramatically backlit. Drawing inspiration from Italian landscapes, travel, food and mid-century graphic design, the artwork provides strong focal points while avoiding a literal interpretation of the Italian theme.


    The bar forms the social heart of the restaurant, with a substantial walnut canopy, extensive bottle display and brass detailing creating a strong focal point. An open kitchen adds theatre and energy, while marble-topped tables, cane-backed chairs, upholstered banquettes and warm, carefully layered lighting create an informal yet sophisticated atmosphere.


    The design extends onto the terrace, where woven furniture and planting create a natural continuation of the interior.


    The result is a contemporary interpretation of Italian hospitality – warm, sociable and relaxed, with a distinctive identity designed to appeal to both everyday diners and those looking for a memorable destination.
